Yu-Gi-Oh Coming to Xbox Live Arcade

via Nebs Blog

Konami releases new Yu-Gi-Oh video games for different systems all the time. These days it's mostly for handhelds like the Nintendo DS or the Sony PSP. But now they're releasing a new children's card game video game where they never released one before- for the Xbox live Arcade. This Spring, get ready for "Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels." Presumably the title comes from Yu-Gi-Oh celebrating its 10th anniversary this year (in Japan at least- it doesn't reach 10 years in the US until next year).

Even though this isn't the kind of game where you go out & buy a disc or cartridge to play it on, it's still a full-fledged Yu-Gi-Oh title. It even comes with a story mode, where you're able to add new cards & booster packs for your digital deck. Plus it allows you to play online against other duelists who are on Xbox Live, which includes Tag Duels as well. You can also customize your own rules, voice chat with your opponent, & view leader boards.

4Kids Streams Subbed Sonic X

via Nebs Blog

I mentioned this in the most recent This Week in Free Anime & Manga post, but it's worth mentioning again in its own topic. For the first time ever, 4Kids Entertainment is streaming uncut, subtitled Japanese episodes of their Sonic X series. Currently the complete first season (26 episodes) have been uploaded to Hulu, making it the first 4Kids series on the site. When the episodes first went up late last week, there were problems with the subtitles for episodes 2 & 7, but these look to have now been fixed.

4Kids originally released a subbed Sonic X test video in July of last year, back when they were at the height of experimenting with subbing their series. & then in August, a 4Kids employee wrote on a now-defunct unofficial blog that full subbed episodes of both Sonic X & Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's would begin rolling out in the Fall. Well the Sonic episodes are a half year behind schedule, but at least they're finally here now. Still no sign of official subtitled episodes of 5D's, but hopefully those are just around the corner as well. For now, check out Sonic X subbed here:

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: Abridged 1

via Nebs Blog

Well, the time has come once again for LittleKuriboh to bid farewell to the Abridged Series he began so long ago. As LK himself put it:

Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged is a dead duck. You know it. I know it. Kroze know it. The guys at TeamFourStar know it. Heck, why do you think I jumped ship in the first place? I'm Freeza, bitch. I don't need no stinking Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. Not anymore.

So instead, he's moving on to his new passion- abridging 5D's! That' right, LK is now giving the Abridged Series treatment to the series about card games on motorcycles! & if the rest of the series is anything like this brilliant first episode, then we can expect some great things here. Checkout ep 1 above, right now!

4Kids Loses $21M, Licenses Anime

via Nebs Blog

4Kids Entertainment announced its fourth quarter & full year results for 2009 earlier this month, & the bad news that has been plaguing the company for the last couple of years continued. As usual, it was pretty rough. 4Kids lost $21 million during the last part of 2009 when compared to the same time period in 2008. Most of that has to do with the poorer than expected results for their Chaotic franchise, which the company put a lot of faith & money behind when they launched it. This accounted for half their total losses for the year- $42 million, which is more than the $37 million they lost in 2008. The loss would've been even greater if the company hadn't sold their rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise to Nickelodeon for $6 million.

As a result, 4Kids' Al Kahn has promised to return to the business model that brought the company prominence & profitability- licensing more anime. Yup, after having gone three years without butchering licensing a title, 4Kids is returning to the anime game. Kahn was quoted as saying "We have decided that 4Kids needs to return to its roots as a licensing and merchandising company that specializes in bringing wonderful Japanese programming and merchandizing to the rest of the world." Mind you, this is after he was quoted as saying "Japan is over" & "manga was dying in Japan" & "TV anime was tired" back in 2007.

Shortly afterwords, 4Kids confirmed one new license, sort of confirmed another, & hinted that even more were on the way for the Fall 2010 season. The series they confirmed is actually a Japanese/Korean co-production work called "Tai Chi Chasers," a 39-episode fantasy series about card games & Asian mythology. The plot, according to 4Kids:

Tai Chi Chasers focuses on Rai, a young orphan, shocked to discover he's a secret descendent of the Tigeroids: an ancient race of peaceful beings locked in struggle with the ruthless and cunning Dragonoids. In a parallel universe called Suhn, the Tigeroids and Dragonoids are locked in an age-old race to recover 500 lost tai chi symbols. Whoever recovers these precious and potent symbols will possess the ultimate power to rule their realm…and destroy their enemies. Rai must now hone his innate tai chi card skills to fight the Dragonoids, find the lost symbols and battle to become one of the champion Tai Chi Chasers.

The characters seem to remind me of those from a certain other series. & the card element behind the show is obviously 4Kids trying to emulate their success with the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. Speaking of which, the sorta confirmed license is that 4Kids actually has the 10th Anniversary Yu-Gi-Oh Movie! Really all Kahn said was that they were participating in a new 3D Yu-Gi-Oh movie, but I think we all know what that is referring to. Quite surprising considering they've basically given up on the franchise. Maybe they plan to show it in the US on our 10th Anniversary for Yu-Gi-Oh, which wont occur until next year.

New Yu-Gi-Oh Packs Packing Heat

via Nebs Blog

For those who play the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, some really good booster packs & series are coming out stateside. The first is the "Absolute Powerforce Special Edition," which includes special new chase cards. In addition to including three Absolute Powerforce booster packs, the Special Edition version will also include 1 of 2 super-rare cards that were previously only released in Shonen Jump magazine- Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, & Dandylion. Konami has now made it easier for you to get some of the rarest cards in the game. & although perhaps not as cool looking or sounding as REDMD, Dandylion being included is extra special in this case. The reason being is that Konami just updated their list of limited & forbidden cards this month, & the new list is a lot looser than it used to be. Dandylion used to be limited to one card per deck, but now you can have up to two if you wish. You can get the Special Edition pack now for $9.99.

In addition, "Duelist Pack- Kaiba" will also be coming out in the US beginning April 20, & Konami has provided details on what to expect. Coming in at 40 cards, it'll be the largest Duelist Pack to ever be released. The main card here will be a brand new effect version of the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon. When the game first came out, BEWD was one of the most powerful cards in the game, simply due to its high attack points. But monster effects were extremely rare back then, & have become extremely common today. These days you can find monsters that have the same attack (or higher) as BEWD, are just as easy to summon, but also come with powerful effects. BEWD isn't so great anymore these days. Luckily, Malefic Blue-Eyes White Dragon is here to change that.

The brand new Malefic type monsters (known as Sin monsters in Japan) were first introduced in the 10th Anniversary Yu-Gi-Oh Movie by the villain Paradox. Malefic monsters are basically corrupted versions of their regular selves, & allows you to summon extremely powerful dragons VERY easily as long as you have the conditions met. Basically, as long as you have a Field Spell in play & have the original version of the monster somewhere in the deck, you can summon a very powerful monster straight to the field without any sacrifices.

But aside from MBEWD, the new Kaiba pack also includes five Ultimate Rare cards. Three of them are forbidden cards & can't be used in duels (so why even bother including them?)- Chaos Emperor Dragon, Cyber Jar, & Pot of Greed. The other two are Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, & Dragon Master Knight. Tons of other must-have cards are included as well.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX Top-Selling Manga of January

via Nebs Blog

Viz Media’s English release of the fourth volume of Yu-Gi-Oh GX was the top-selling graphic novel in January 2010, according to BookScan's chart. It wasn't just the top selling manga, mind you, but the highest selling of ALL graphic novels (including American comics & OELs) in the US. I guess Yu-Gi-Oh isn't as dead in America as originally feared. It's just unfortunate that the fifth volume of GX wont be coming out until all the way in October.

The list also shows that the One Piece speed-up is selling well as well. Not as good as the two times that Naruto did it, but good nonetheless. & somehow Death Note continues to crawl onto the list, despite having been released over four years ago. Here's BookScan's list of the top 20 graphic novel volumes for all last month:

  1. YU-GI-OH! GX VOL. 4
  2. THE BOOK OF GENESIS ILLUS. BY R. CRUMB HC
  3. NARUTO VOL. 47
  4. FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST VOL. 22
  5. WATCHMEN TP
  6. THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE: RECORDED ATTACKS
  7. BLACK BUTLER VOL. 1
  8. ONE PIECE VOL. 24
  9. NARUTO VOL. 46
  10. MAXIMUM RIDE: THE MANGA VOL. 2
  11. VAMPIRE KNIGHT VOL. 8
  12. ONE PIECE VOL. 25
  13. MAXIMUM RIDE: THE MANGA VOL. 1
  14. ONE PIECE VOL. 26
  15. ONE PIECE VOL. 27
  16. ONE PIECE VOL. 28
  17. VAMPIRE KNIGHT VOL. 1
  18. THE WALKING DEAD VOL. 11: FEAR THE HUNTERS
  19. BLEACH VOL. 29

Nanoha vs Fate vs Paradox at the Movies

via Nebs Blog

On January 23, three huge anime movies debuted on the big screen in Japan at the same time- Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st, Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works, & Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Movie: Super Fusion! Bonds that Transcend Time. Well now it's time to see how they did.

Yu-Gi-Oh 10th, the only major motion picture of the three, debuted #6 in the Japanese box office & raked in over 100 million yen on 124 screens. Nanoha, which is playing on only 19 screens in all of Japan, received over 60 million yen for its debut. & the Fate/Stay Night movie, which played on only 12 screens, earned close to 40 million yen. So Yu-Gi-Oh has earned the most of the three, but how much its earning per screen is much smaller than what Nanoha & Fate/Stay Night have earned.

Upper Deck Settles Yu-Gi-Oh Card Case

via Nebs Blog

Upper Deck & Konami have finally settled their lawsuit. The two companies notified the court this week that they’ve reached a settlement in the litigation over counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh cards. The American card company will have to pay Konami Digital Entertainment an undisclosed amount of money as a result.

Interestingly enough, both companies released press releases about how satisfied they are with the results. First Upper Deck released a statement expressing its satisfaction with the settlement of its long-running litigation with Konami, calling it a "successful resolution." Their attorney Richard Howell released the following statement:

"Upper Deck is extremely pleased with the cooperative resolution with Konami. Sometimes it simply takes a courtroom, the presence of a jury, and the start of a trial for a party like Konami to finally recognize that it will be unable to live up to its pre-trial rhetoric."

However, he later followed that up with the following (darkly humorous) statement in terms Yu-Gi-Oh players would understand:

"At this point, Upper Deck doesn’t have a lot of Life Points. We’re talking about behavior that, from a defense attorney’s standpoint, I can’t defend and I am not going to defend. I’m here defending a counterfeiter. And now I have to deal with that issue."

In contrast, Konami released a statement expressing its own satisfaction with its settlement with Upper Deck, also calling it a "successful resolution." Chairman Kazumi Kitaue had the following to say on the matter:

"We are extremely pleased with the successful resolution of our case against Upper Deck. Konami’s goal is and has been to protect Duelists from counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards and to protect the integrity of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. This goal was achieved when Upper Deck was prohibited for eternity from distributing counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards and from holding itself out as the authorized distributor of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG."

Additionally, a Notice of Conditional Settlement was filed in the litigation between the two companies over the lawsuit. More information about that can be found here:
